qTpoc Talk

The University of Missouri Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer Resource Center in Columbia, Mo. hosted an event for Queer People of Color on Monday, Nov. 10, 2014 that aimed to foster open discussion about the issues plaguing the transgender community.

The event is titled ‘qTpoc,’ adding a ‘T’ for ‘transgender’ to the Queer People of Color acronym ‘QPOC.’ Though QPOC meets weekly, the MU LGBTQ Resource Center planned and advertised qTpoc as an event in an attempt to spread the word about QPOC meetings and give students a chance to discuss issues specific to the transgender community.

Remi Rocha is a student who identifies as a queer person of color and describes herself as a QPOC regular.

“I’m still educating myself about trans issues, so I like to go to as many events like this as I can to further educate myself,” said Rocha.

  1. Your story was very detailed. I enjoyed the extra mile you took to explain how this is a qtpoc meeting instead of just a QPOC meeting. The post just sort of ends though it seems like you could have filled that space after the quote.

  2. I think that the pictures were really good at capturing the event and the information presented was great. I feel that if some specific issues that people talk about were included, it would have been more informative to the reader.

  3. I really like how colorful and visually appealing both your photos are. You did a really good job with that. The story also reads quick but packs in a lot of solid information.

Though some may not even consider it an issue and most can infer that the bottom photo features Remi Rocha, text confirming that would add to the piece, I believe.

  4. This was well-written and informative. Although I already read a post about the same topic, I felt like I learned something. The quote was nice, and really ended the text on a strong note.

Your pictures did not have captions though and it would be nice if you placed a picture in between paragraphs instead of straight text on top, and images on the bottom. Great job though!

  5. You did a great job explaining the event and providing some background on the LGBTQ Resource Center. I thought you also provided some great photos that were well-lit and relevant to the story. I think Remi Rocha was a great voice to include, as a QPOC regular and individual who identifies with the queer community. The addition of photo captions would have been useful, but I do know that was difficult for me to figure out using the WordPress app!

  6. Jackie,

You did an excellent job making this look like a real journalism piece with proper quotes, titles, dates, times, an quality pictures. You also had a great summary of what exactly QPOC is all about. One suggestion is to break up the text with the pictures you took!

  7. I thought that this blog post was really well done. I liked that you took the time to thoroughly explain what Qtpoc/ QPOC is because I didn’t know anything about this club before reading your post. The only negative thing I have is that the pictures don’t have captions, but overall the post was really nicely done!

  8. Really well written and informative. I really liked how you further explained what qTpoc stood for and talked to a “regular” of the group. Also thought it was very smart to leave off with the quote you did because it gave a great sense of the type of members in the group. Loved both pictures as well.
